Spring 2015 Korea-Related Course Offerings

Croft Visiting Assistant Professor of Korean Studies Dr. Shine Choi will be teaching three Korea-related courses next spring, and the department of modern languages will be teaching four levels of Korean language.

Anth 311 Section 1/Soc 451 Section 3: Topics in Sociology/Anthropology
The Two Koreas and Beyond

Shine Choi – Tues & Thurs 11-12:15

This course aims to provide an overview of the shrimps among the whales in East Asia – North and South Koreas. It looks at the international politics involving the two Koreas as well as the contemporary North and South Korean societies, cultures and politics. While Psy, Kim Jong-un and Kimchi will be important components of the course, the objective is to move beyond and deeper in our understanding of North and South Korea.

Soc 359 Sociology of Globalization

Minjoo Oh and Shine Choi – Tues & Thurs 4-5:15

This course examines the causes and consequences of globalization from an interdisciplinary perspective. Its focus is on the evolution of the global economy, the formation of international political structures, and the emergence of global culture. For this upcoming semester, the course will also serve as a rare opportunity to explore the global north-south relations in Asia.

Inst 310 Section 1: Topics in East Asian Studies
International Relations, Culture, and East Asia

Shine Choi – Tues & Thurs 2:30-3:45

This course introduces regional specificity and cultural dimensions to thinking about international issues of security, economic growth/development and human rights. We will look at popular culture, namely films, novels, documentaries and graphic novels from and about East Asia (China, Japan, Korea) to understand theories about international relations and cultural/identity politics.
