Zachary Kagan Guthrie is a historian of modern southern Africa, focusing on central Mozambique. He began teaching at the University of Mississippi in the fall of 2014, after earning his B.A. at Wesleyan University and his Ph.D. at Princeton University. His first book, Bound for Work, examined forced labor and mobility in colonial Mozambique. His work has also been published in African Economic History, Journal of Southern African Studies, International Journal of Labor and Working Class History, and International Journal of African Historical Studies. His current research examines the history of social and political reforms in the Portuguese empire during the 1960's. In addition to teaching courses on the history of Africa and the history of southern Africa, he teaches Introduction to African Studies in the Croft Institute.
